The Home Ministry has granted another extension for foreign workers in the Maldives to update their biometric information on the Expat Online system, after identifying thousands who remain unregistered.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the ministry said that a review of the system found that 27,773 foreign workers employed under 3,942 registered employers had not yet completed their biometric updates.
The initial deadline for registration was 20 April, which was later extended. However, the ministry noted that full compliance has not yet been achieved.
The ministry said foreign workers who have not yet updated their biometrics are required to do so by November. The registration process will be conducted at the Job Centre on the ground floor of the NCIT Building.
The Home Ministry warned that foreigners who fail to update their biometrics without valid reason will face deportation, while employers registered under the Expat Online system may be fined MVR 50,000 under the Employment Act, in addition to further action under the Immigration Act.
Employers and foreign workers seeking more information have been advised to contact the Homeland hotline at 1485 or email [email protected].
