The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has stated that the water supplied in Fuvahmulah is safe for use, though many residents continue to report that the water remains discoloured and unclean.

Water supply to households resumed on Thursday after service was interrupted on Monday due to contamination concerns in the island’s network, which serves a population of nearly 10,000.

In a press release issued on Friday, the MFDA said water supplied in Fuvahmulah now meets standards recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

However, residents have since shared photos on social media showing murky water after filling glass containers.

Fuvahmulah Mayor Ismail Rafeeq told Atoll Times on Saturday that the council had received numerous complaints from households.

“When we visited some houses, we observed that the water was significantly darker than its normal colour,” the mayor said.

He noted that although the MFDA's press release said the water was safe, some households were still receiving water in visibly unclean condition. The council has requested the MFDA's detailed test results.

“We have been trying to obtain the test results beforehand. Following yesterday’s press release, we will now need to request them officially,” he said, adding that the council has not yet received a response.

Water services in Fuvahmulah are provided by Fenaka Corporation.

Fenaka has previously said the interruption occurred because some customers had created cross connections in the system, causing contamination. Many residents disagree, saying the main issue lies with water production and system maintenance.

Mayor Ismail Rafeeq reiterated this concern.

“These issues could lead to serious problems, so proper action is required. Regular water testing and pipe cleaning have not been carried out,” he said.
