Parliament on Wednesday approved the appointment of former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof, who recently joined the ruling PNC, as Ambassador to Japan.

Sixty members voted in favour of appointing Mahloof as the Ambassador to Japan. No votes were cast against the nomination.

The position became vacant following the death of Hassan Sobir in July. Mahloof was nominated to fill the post after Sobir’s passing.

Mahloof began his political career with the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and was elected to the first Parliament formed under the current Constitution, representing the Galolhu South constituency on a DRP ticket.

He later joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) when it was formed in 2011 after internal disagreements within the DRP. Mahloof subsequently left the PPM and became active in opposition to former President Abdulla Yameen, during which period he was imprisoned.

Mahloof later joined the MDP following the 2018 presidential election and served as Youth Minister in the administration that followed. He left the MDP in September before joining the PNC.
