Ex-Maldive Gas chief Maumoon appeals over bribery conviction
Maumoon was sentenced in September to 12 years, nine months and 18 days in prison after being found guilty on two counts of bribery.
Former Maldive Gas Managing Director Abdulla Maumoon has filed an appeal at the High Court against a custodial sentence imposed by the Criminal Court in connection with bribery charges.
Maumoon was sentenced in September to 12 years, nine months and 18 days in prison after being found guilty on two counts of bribery. The convictions relate to seven alleged bribery transactions involving a company identified as 3DH.
According to the High Court registry, Maumoon submitted his appeal last Monday. The High Court has not yet decided whether to accept the appeal for hearing.
Maumoon served as Managing Director of Maldive Gas from 10 December 2013 to 16 November 2018.
Prosecutors allege that a total of USD 298,403.50, equivalent to MVR 4.6 million, was deposited through seven transactions between 2016 and 2017. The alleged transactions are as follows:

7 April 2016: USD 29,941.50 deposited into Maumoon’s Bank of Maldives (BML) account

7 June 2016: USD 49,921.50 deposited into his Bank of Ceylon account, and USD 12,201.50 deposited into a BML account belonging to Mon Arc, a company linked to Maumoon

1 August 2016: USD 49,949.50 deposited into Mon Arc’s BML account

9 April 2017: USD 24,930 deposited into an Islamic bank account of I Developers Pvt Ltd, a company affiliated with Maumoon

15 May 2017: Attempted deposit of USD 46,555 into Maumoon’s Islamic bank account

23 August 2017: USD 49,955 deposited into Maumoon’s Islamic bank account

8 October 2017: USD 34,950 deposited into a BML account belonging to Maumoon’s brother, Hameed
The Criminal Court issued verdicts on two of the seven charges, resulting in the sentence currently under appeal. Proceedings relating to the remaining charges are ongoing.
