Drugs worth MVR 2.2 billion seized over two years, says home minister

Drugs valued at MVR 2.2 billion have been seized over the past two years, Home Minister Ali Ihsan said on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference, Ihsan said one of the ministry’s main priorities during the period was intercepting drugs smuggled into the Maldives and taking legal action against those involved.
He said law enforcement agencies seized a total of 1.1 tonnes of drugs over the past two years, with an estimated street value of MVR 2.2 billion.
“This is the first time in our history that such a volume of drugs has been seized within a two-year period,” Ihsan said.
Police are also carrying out a nationwide anti-drug operation aimed at disrupting trafficking networks. Ihsan said more than 90 people have been arrested as part of the operation.
Police have not released further details regarding the arrests or the scope of the operation.
