MDP President Abdulla Shahid on Tuesday said he will not support any specific candidate in internal party elections while serving as party president.
His remarks follow speculation that he had backed former MP Ali Azim, who is contesting the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primary for the Malé mayoral ticket against incumbent mayor Adam Azim.
Shahid rejected the claims and said his position is to remain neutral during internal contests. He said he wishes success to all candidates contesting the MDP primary for the upcoming local council elections.
He said that once candidates secure the party’s ticket, he will work with all of them to support the MDP’s campaign in the council elections.
“With the will of Allah, the MDP will win this election,” Shahid said.
The MDP primary is scheduled to be held on 16 January. It was initially set for 30 January but was brought forward due to a shortened deadline for submitting nomination forms.
The contest for the Malé mayoral ticket is expected to be the most closely contested race within the MDP primary.
