The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has said it will take action against the renting of social housing units in Hulhumalé to foreigners, citing violations of housing agreements.

The statement follows complaints raised by residents during meetings in Malé, where concerns were expressed that some social housing units are being rented out contrary to the purpose of the schemes. Residents also reported that labour quarters for foreigners have been set up in some locations.

HDC said it has identified cases where social housing units developed by the government in Hulhumalé are being rented out illegally. The corporation has instructed occupants to vacate such premises by the 3rd of next month and has reminded beneficiaries to comply with the terms of their agreements.

The corporation said that if social housing units are rented to foreigners after the deadline, the housing agreements will be cancelled.

HDC has previously stated that flats rented out in violation of agreements may be confiscated. Separately, Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Housing, has said action will be taken against those who rent out flats allocated under housing schemes.
