The Juvenile Court on Tuesday sentenced a man to a total of 17 years in a juvenile detention facility for the kidnapping and killing of a 13-year-old boy in Hulhumalé.
The incident occurred at around 2:00 pm on 2 June 2021. One of the accused was 17 years old at the time of the offence. He was charged with intentional homicide, unauthorised detention, and misuse of a deceased body.
The Juvenile Court ruled that all three charges had been proven.
For the charge of intentional homicide, the court imposed a sentence of 16 years, 10 months and seven days in a juvenile correctional facility. After deducting four years, six months and two days already spent in custody, the remaining sentence stands at 12 years, four months and five days. The court also ordered two consecutive months of fasting as expiation.
For the charge of unauthorised detention, the court imposed a sentence of 11 months and nine days in a juvenile detention centre. An additional sentence of 18 days in detention was imposed for the charge of misuse of the deceased.
The Criminal Court has issued a judgment in a related case against another adult accused. That matter will be referred to the Juvenile Court for a decision on sentencing.
The case also involves Ibrahim Zihan of N. Landhoo, who faces multiple charges. His trial at the Criminal Court is being conducted behind closed doors.
