Theft suspect was released under Solih's pardon in 2023 election
Asif, 36, was recently arrested in connection with the theft of MVR 4 million from a residence in Malé last month.
Ismail Asif, who was serving a 10-year prison sentence, was released following a presidential pardon granted by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, according to information obtained by ‘Dhauru’.

The Criminal Court Maldives sentenced Asif to 10 years’ imprisonment in September 2022 after finding him guilty of assault using a sharp object in a manner dangerous to human life.
According to sources, the sentence was commuted on 19 September 2023. The remaining duration of the sentence was reduced to five days, resulting in Asif’s release on 25 September 2023.
The pardon was granted after the first round of the presidential election and prior to the second round held on 30 September 2023.
The conviction relates to a 2019 incident aboard the vessel ‘Jaree’ near AA. Maalhos. According to case details, Asif attacked Ismail Hammad during an argument and pushed him into the sea. Hammad later reached shore and received treatment for injuries.
Hammad had informed investigators that the dispute arose from a disagreement between the two individuals. He sustained injuries to multiple parts of his body.
Asif was charged with assault using a weapon with intent to cause bodily harm.
