Thalassaemia patients to receive MVR 2,000 monthly allowance
Health Minister Ibrahim Nazim said patients undergoing treatment for thalassaemia would be eligible for the allowance from this month.
Thalassaemia patients will begin receiving a monthly allowance of MVR 2,000 from Thursday, the government announced on Wednesday.
The announcement was made at a ceremony held at Dharumavantha Hospital, where the National Social Protection Agency outlined key social protection programmes scheduled for implementation.
Health Minister Ibrahim Nazim said patients undergoing treatment for thalassaemia would be eligible for the allowance from this month. He noted that the initiative fulfils a pledge made by President Mohamed Muizzu.
The 2026 state budget has allocated MVR 11.7 million for the thalassaemia allowance.
Regulations governing the payment of the allowance were published on Wednesday and came into force the same day. Under the rules, the allowance will be administered by the National Social Protection Agency in collaboration with the Thalassemia Centre.
The allowance will be paid to individuals registered in the National Register of Thalassaemia Persons maintained by the Thalassaemia Centre. Each eligible recipient will receive MVR 2,000 per month, with payments commencing from the month following the submission of an application.
