Hazardous air quality recorded in parts of Maldives
Monitoring data shows that Villimale recorded an AQI reading of 193.
Air quality levels in several parts of the Maldives have reached ranges considered hazardous to health, according to data from air quality monitoring systems.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded readings between 163 and 193 in some locations, placing them in the category classified as hazardous. AQI levels between 151 and 200 indicate a health risk for the general population, with increased likelihood of respiratory and cardiovascular effects.
Monitoring data shows that Villimale recorded an AQI reading of 193. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels were measured at 79 micrograms per cubic metre, exceeding the minimum safety guideline set by the World Health Organisation.
In Malé, the AQI was recorded at 118. PM2.5 levels measured 42.3 micrograms per cubic metre, also above the WHO guideline level. Such conditions may pose increased risks for individuals with existing health conditions.
Air quality levels were also elevated in Kudahuvadhoo, where the AQI was recorded at 158.
The Maldives Meteorological Service said air pollution levels are expected to peak today and tomorrow, with conditions likely to remain elevated in the coming weeks.
Health authorities have advised precautionary measures during periods of reduced air quality. These include wearing protective masks when outdoors, keeping doors and windows closed to limit the entry of polluted air, using air purifiers where available, and reducing outdoor physical activities, particularly for vulnerable individuals.
