First Lady Sajidha Mohamed on Monday urged voters to elect a council aligned with President Mohamed Muizzu, warning that a lack of cooperation would affect the public.

She was speaking at a campaign event for the PNC candidate for Malé mayor, former Defence Minister Moosa Ali Jaleel, as well as candidates contesting the Maafannu South constituency for the Malé City Council and the Women’s Development Committee.

Maafannu South is the constituency of President Muizzu and his family.

Sajidha said the President had worked for the public during his two years as Mayor and during his time in office as President.

She said it was important that councillors and members of the Women’s Development Committee elect a mayor who works with the national leadership.

Referring to decisions taken by the government, including restrictions on vaping and tobacco use for certain age groups, Sajidha said she believed many people viewed these policies positively.

She said the President was taking difficult decisions in a country facing social challenges, and that electing a council that did not cooperate with the government would have consequences for the public.

She added that there would be little benefit if councils did not work with a government that was implementing its policies.
