Maldives president to attend Bangladesh govt inauguration
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend.
President Mohamed Muizzu is expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh’s new government on Tuesday, following the country’s general election.
Bangladesh’s election was won by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), with the BNP-led coalition securing 209 of the 300 seats in parliament. The poll was the first held since the 2024 removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Bangladesh’s Deshkal News Agency quoted Maldivian and Bangladeshi foreign officials as saying that President Muizzu is scheduled to attend the ceremony. The Maldivian government has not issued an official statement on the visit.
The ceremony is also expected to be attended by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. India will be represented by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, accompanied by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend.
Other countries sending representatives include Pakistan, which will be represented by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, and Nepal, which will be represented by Foreign Minister Balananda Sharma.
Media reports said that Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, invited heads of state and government from 13 countries. The invited countries include China, Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, Maldives, Nepal and Bhutan.
