The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has decided to launch an immediate investigation into workplace safety issues at Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO).

The decision follows an incident in which a WAMCO employee was injured at a company site in Malé. The injured worker is being treated at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and remains on a ventilator.

HRCM said the decision to conduct an urgent investigation into the safety and security of WAMCO employees was taken at a commission meeting held on Monday.

The incident has drawn public attention following posts circulated on social media, which allege recurring safety issues at WAMCO sites and the absence of risk allowances for employees.

Maldives Police Service said the incident is under investigation but did not disclose details about how it occurred. WAMCO has not issued an official statement.

Police and the HRCM responded after claims circulated online and journalists sought clarification through media groups.

According to information shared in a social media post accompanying a photograph, the employee fell from the ramp of a WAMCO vehicle onto a container. The post states that the distance between the ramp and the container was about 12 to 13 feet. It also claims the injured employee was a company driver and that the incident occurred at around 3.00 pm on Sunday.

The post further alleges that employees present at the site were asked not to disclose the incident and that the case was reported to police by the employee’s family.
