Motorcycle crash suspect released on conditions after child’s death
The motorcycle was being driven by a 19-year-old man who did not hold a licence to operate the vehicle.

A young man arrested in connection with the death of a child riding as a passenger on a motorcycle has been released on conditions, the Criminal Court said on Thursday.
The case relates to a traffic accident near the Sinamalé Bridge traffic lights, where a motorcycle lost control and struck the pavement at 1:39 pm on Wednesday. Police said a 16-year-old boy seated on the back of the motorcycle died in the incident.
The motorcycle was being driven by a 19-year-old man who did not hold a licence to operate the vehicle.
At a closed hearing on Thursday, the court heard that the suspect did not dispute that the incident occurred. He told the court that the crash was not intentional and happened while he and two friends were riding. He also expressed regret over the incident.
Maldives Police Service told the court that the case remains under investigation and requested that the suspect be remanded in custody if he breaches the conditions of release. Police also said they would not oppose his release provided he cooperates with the investigation and complies with the conditions imposed.
The court ordered the suspect’s release under strict conditions and said police may seek his re-arrest if any of the conditions are violated within the stipulated period.
