Indian billionaire departed for treatment after accident, police say
The individual identified as Gautam Singhania, Managing Director of India’s Raymond Group, was operating the vessel at the time of the incident.
The Maldives Police Service has stated that an Indian national involved in a speedboat accident near Vaavu Atoll has left the Maldives with two others to seek further medical treatment abroad.
The incident occurred late Thursday night when a speedboat carrying seven passengers capsized approximately two nautical miles southwest of Keyodhoo. Two individuals remain missing following the accident.
Police said the report was received at approximately 1:15 a.m.
The individual identified as Gautam Singhania, Managing Director of India’s Raymond Group, was operating the vessel at the time of the incident, according to information obtained by authorities.
Police stated that Singhania and a British national departed the Maldives on Friday to seek further medical care. Authorities also confirmed that another Indian national, who sustained injuries including the loss of an arm, travelled to India on Saturday for treatment.
According to police, the vessel involved belonged to ‘TT Ashena’, a private yacht owned by a company associated with Singhania. The speedboat is reported to be of the Cigarette Racing brand.
Police said there were seven individuals on board at the time of the accident: Singhania, a British woman, a Russian woman, and four Indian men. The Russian woman and the four Indian men fell into the sea when the vessel capsized.
All except two Indian men were rescued. Search operations are ongoing for the two missing individuals.
Police added that one injured individual remains under medical care at Tree Top Hospital in Hulhumalé.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
