Construction of a mosque on the site of the Bandara Mosque in Malé will begin after the month of Ramadan, Islamic Affairs Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said on Friday.
The minister said the project will proceed with assistance arranged by a donor.
Speaking about the plan, Shaheem said the project is part of efforts to renovate mosques in the capital.
He said that once the project is completed, mosques in Malé will have undergone renovation or reconstruction.
The Masjid Yusuf al-Barbari, also known as the Barbari Mosque, was recently rebuilt and reopened with assistance from a private donor.
Shaheem had earlier stated that a total of 19 mosques are scheduled to open in different parts of the Maldives during Ramadan.
