MIFCO has decided to turn its facility on the island of Kanduohgiri, which was previously used for the processing of yellow fin tuna bought by the company, into a modern packing facility that packages local fish products.
MIFCO Managing Director Ismail Fauzy, in an interview to Atoll Times on the occasion of Fishermen's Day that was celebrated on Sunday, said that instead of the company buying all the fish that local fishermen catch, MIFCO plans to talk to the fishermen as well as suppliers so that they can send the fish abroad, with direct contact with the exporters.
Fauzy said:
-
MIFCO plans to provide services to pack the fish to the desired quality instead of buying the big ones
-
The development of Kanduohgiri has been started as a plant that can package fish so that it can be sent abroad
-
Only then can fishermen talk to foreign agents and send fish directly to other countries
-
Fishermen who wish to package the fish in will be able to make online orders without any hassles
"Now we have a lot of young fishermen among us. If MIFCO can provide the kind of packing service to the extent required by foreign suppliers, then young fishermen can sell their fish directly abroad by talking to an agent. That way they can make good profits without investing big," Fauzy said.
He said that MTCC has been entrusted with the task of repairing the island’s harbour. Fauzy added that they have started developing the island as a place to provide packing services by modernising the facilities available within the port.
"We're looking forward to starting those services next year," Fauzy said.
MIFCO is also considering renting out storage space where fish can be cooled and stored, according to Fauzy. He believes that this will allow fishermen to directly sell fish to foreign markets.
