PNC loses council majority in Mahibadhoo stronghold

Provisional results from Saturday’s Local Council Elections indicate that the People’s National Congress (PNC) has not secured a majority in the Mahibadhoo Island Council.
Mahibadhoo has been associated with PNC member Ahmed Thoriq, who has represented the constituency in recent parliamentary elections.
According to the results, the council seats are split between the PNC, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and an independent candidate.
The PNC secured two council member seats, while the MDP secured two seats, including the Council Presidency. One seat was won by an independent candidate.
The Council Presidency was won by Moosa Mohamed of the MDP, who received 813 votes, or 57 per cent. Rashad Ali of the PNC received 609 votes, or 43 per cent.
For the two seats reserved for women, Muneefa Adam of the PNC received 899 votes, Zaeema Mohamed of the MDP received 818 votes, and Shaufa Adam of the PNC received 619 votes.
For the remaining two council seats, Mohamed Maumoon of the PNC received 642 votes, followed by independent candidate Bunyamin Hassan with 482 votes. Ibrahim Shatir of the PNC received 433 votes, Ibrahim Vaseef Adam of the MDP received 397 votes, Ibrahim Arusham of the MDP received 283 votes, and Mohamed Irshad, an independent candidate, received 233 votes.
The results indicate that no single party holds a majority in the council.
The results remain provisional pending completion of the count.
