PNC fails to secure majority in Nazim's Dhiggaru constituency

According to figures released by the Elections Commission, MDP secured the majority of seats in three of the five islands in the constituency.

Provisional results from Saturday’s Local Council Elections indicate that the People’s National Congress (PNC) has not secured a majority across islands in the Dhiggaru constituency, represented by Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim.

According to figures released by the Elections Commission, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) secured the majority of seats in three of the five islands in the constituency.

In Dhiggaru, the MDP secured all three seats. Ahmed Nishan won the Council Presidency with 552 votes (61 per cent), while Wasim Hussain of the PNC received 355 votes (39 per cent). Aishath Reema of the MDP secured the women’s reserved seat with 501 votes (56 per cent), while Aishath Hana of the PNC received 397 votes (44 per cent). Abdullah Arif of the MDP won the general seat with 511 votes (57 per cent), while Adam Haleel of the PNC received 388 votes (43 per cent).

In Maduvvari, Ibrahim Aslam Ali of the MDP secured the Council Presidency with 222 votes (53 per cent), while Mohamed Shiham of the PNC received 198 votes (47 per cent). The women’s reserved seat was won by Musheera Adamfulhu of the PNC with 220 votes (56 per cent), while Hawwa Ilhama of the MDP received 174 votes (44 per cent). For the general seat, Haleem Ali of the MDP is leading with 145 votes, followed by Hassan Mahasin of the PNC with 139 votes and Mohamed Shaukat, an independent candidate, with 116 votes.

In Rathmandhoo, the PNC secured all three seats. Mohamed Mihad won the Council Presidency with 104 votes (66 per cent), while Ismail Nahid of the MDP received 53 votes (34 per cent). Fatmath Nasra of the PNC secured the women’s reserved seat with 101 votes (67 per cent), while Fatmath Zahira, an independent candidate, received 51 votes (33 per cent). The general seat was uncontested.

In Veyvah, Mamdouh Waheed of the MDP secured the Council Presidency with 131 votes (54 per cent), while Shazeem Hassan of the PNC received 112 votes (46 per cent). The women’s reserved seat is led by Fatmath Suadha of the PNC with 134 votes (55 per cent), while Sharuna Mohamed of the MDP received 108 votes (45 per cent). For the general seat, Ahushan Naim of the MDP is leading with 122 votes, while Mohamed Nazeeh of the PNC has received 120 votes.

In Muli, the PNC secured all three seats. Muawiyath Shakeeb won the Council Presidency with 196 votes, followed by Ahmed Rauf, an independent candidate, with 145 votes, Ahmed Nafiz of the MDP with 124 votes, and Ahmed Shatir, an independent candidate, with 97 votes. Mariyam Nishana of the PNC secured the women’s reserved seat with 229 votes, followed by Fatmath Nashaya, an independent candidate, with 194 votes and Asma Hussainfulhu, an independent candidate, with 98 votes. Adam Naim of the PNC won the general seat with 190 votes, followed by Hassan Sobah, an independent candidate, with 137 votes.

Based on the provisional results, the MDP has secured a majority in three islands, while the PNC leads in two.

The results remain provisional pending completion of the count.
