The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has dismissed its Legal Director, Ahmed Mauroof, from his position.

The party’s Chairperson, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, informed Mauroof of the decision in a letter issued on Tuesday. The letter did not state a reason for the dismissal.

“On behalf of the party, I wish to express my gratitude for the services you rendered during your tenure,” the letter stated.

Efforts to obtain further comment from Ghafoor were not successful.

Mauroof, who previously served in the legal department of the President’s Office during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, posted a message on social media after Monday night’s party rally.

“Arrogance is a path to failure,” he wrote, without naming any individual.

He also referred to the need for humility and for providing guidance to the public.

The dismissal follows internal discussions within the party regarding the agenda for the rally.

Some party members have called for Ghafoor to step down. There have also been reports of a possible no-confidence motion against him.

The concerns relate to the exclusion of former President Mohamed Nasheed and former party chairperson Fayyaz Ismail from the speaking agenda. Both did not attend the rally.
