Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, on Monday called for the resignation of President Mohamed Muizzu following the outcome of Saturday’s elections.

Ghafoor made the remarks at a rally held at Artificial Beach to mark the party’s performance in the Local Council Elections and the referendum.

He said the results reflected public opinion on the government and called on the President to step down.

“We have secured a majority in all cities. We have won in large islands and in many smaller islands. We have also won over 70 per cent in what was effectively a referendum,” he said.

He stated that the results indicated a loss of public confidence in the administration.

“The people have declared this government a failure. They have said, ‘Resign!’ I am calling upon President Dr Muizzu to resign. I urge the President to follow international practices when public trust is lost,” he said.

Ghafoor also referred to concerns raised by the public during the campaign period, including issues related to the use of public funds, governance and the rule of law.

He said the party would continue its work based on the outcome of the vote.

The elections included Local Council Elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) Elections and a referendum on whether Presidential and Parliamentary elections should be held at the same time.
