Acting Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, on Monday called on party members to maintain unity following recent elections.

Ghafoor made the remarks after a rally held at Artificial Beach to mark the party’s performance in the Local Council Elections and referendum.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed and former party chairperson Fayyaz Ismail were not present at the event.

Reports indicate that both declined to attend after a change to the speaking arrangements. According to information shared by Ghafoor on X, the programme had designated only himself and party president Abdulla Shahid to speak on behalf of the leadership, with other speaking roles allocated to mayors, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) presidents, the campaign manager and the referendum committee chair.

Ghafoor stated that both Nasheed and Fayyaz had requested speaking slots, but concerns arose during the planning process.

“I regret the dissemination of information that undermines our internal stability. I hope that in light of this victory, all members will cooperate to keep this party united,” he said.

Fayyaz also commented on the election outcome in a separate post, stating that the results reflected the efforts of party members and voter support.

“The public is dissatisfied with the government. This is an opportunity to regain trust. It is our responsibility to ensure that the expectations of citizens are met,” he said.

During the rally, a seat was reserved for Nasheed in the front row. Some attendees called out regarding his absence.

Nasheed recently rejoined the MDP ahead of the elections and was involved in campaign activities, including efforts related to the referendum and council contests.

The elections included Local Council Elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) Elections and a referendum on whether Presidential and Parliamentary elections should be held at the same time.
