Authorities have stated that action will be taken against the import and sale of drugs for weight loss, muscle strengthening, skin treatment and sexual purposes without approval.
The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) said in a gazette notice Sunday that it has observed the import of medicines without approval and their sale through online platforms and retail outlets. These products are being purchased and used by the public without prescriptions from medical practitioners.
According to the MFDA, such medicines are not assessed for safety and quality. The authority stated that their use may lead to risks to public health, including heart attack, stroke and sudden death.
The MFDA noted that these medicines may only be sold through licensed pharmacies under a permit. Products sold without approval will be removed from the market, and legal action will be taken against those responsible.
In January, the MFDA issued a notice advising the public to exercise caution when purchasing medicines from online platforms that advertise and sell products without approval.
