Govt conducts annual review of political appointees
He said the current assessment is not aimed at removing a fixed number of employees, but at reviewing performance and professional standards.
The government has commenced its annual performance assessment of political appointees, Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef said on Friday.
Speaking on a programme aired on state media, PSM, Shareef said the evaluation process is carried out each year to assess the performance of political staff across ministries.
He said the current assessment is not aimed at removing a fixed number of employees, but at reviewing performance and professional standards.
“Last year, we conducted similar evaluations of political staff through a structured framework involving specific forms and questionnaires. This is a routine annual process to assess the performance of those in political roles,” he said.
According to Shareef, the assessment is being conducted under the supervision of the President’s Office, with personnel assigned to review performance.
He said the outcome of the assessment may result in one of three decisions: retaining the employee in the current role, terminating employment, or transferring the employee to another ministry.
“If an individual’s contribution does not add value to their respective ministry, there is no justification for keeping them in that role. In such cases, they will not be retained,” he said.
Shareef said political appointees are paid from the state budget and that the government has a responsibility to ensure they meet required standards.
Political appointments are commonly given to individuals affiliated with the ruling party. The current administration has faced public scrutiny over the number of such positions and related expenditure, although no official figures have been disclosed.
