Nasheed backs Fayyaz for premiership, proposes constitutional changes
Nasheed and Fayyaz stated that they will seek support within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for the proposed changes.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has endorsed Fayyaz Ismail for a senior government role as part of a proposal to amend the Constitution.
The announcement was made on Sunday during a joint press conference, where both figures presented a set of proposed changes under a programme titled “The Big Change” (Bodu Badhalu).
The proposals include separating the roles of Head of State and Head of Government, and introducing a system in which the Head of Government is elected through a direct public vote.
“In implementing this transformation, I endorse Fayyaz Ismail to contest as the Head of Government,” Nasheed said.
Nasheed and Fayyaz stated that they will seek support within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for the proposed changes. Nasheed said the reforms should be implemented without delay and indicated that action may be taken to advance the proposals.
The proposal also outlines that the Head of State would be elected by individuals holding elected office, rather than through a direct public vote. However, removal from office would require a vote by the public.
Both figures said they would engage with party members to advance the proposal.
