The Elections Commission of Maldives has warned the People’s National Front that legal action will be taken if the party continues to breach regulations governing political activities.

The commission issued the warning on Monday, citing repeated complaints about conduct during street gatherings organised by the party led by former President Abdulla Yameen.

Since the release of a documentary by Adhadhu last month, which included allegations against President Mohamed Muizzu, PNF has referred to the claims during protests. Demonstrations have included the placement of a sofa on public roads, with footage broadcast on social media.

In a statement, the commission said it had previously advised the party to stop such activities.

It also noted that PNF had declined an invitation to attend discussions at the commission.

“Should these actions persist, the Commission will be compelled to take measures as prescribed under the Political Parties Act,” the statement said.

The commission stated that holding political gatherings in streets and public areas beyond what is permitted under law constitutes a breach of the code of conduct.

It added that obstructing another party’s meeting or attempting to hold events at the same location is also a violation.

The commission said it had formally communicated its concerns to Abdulla Yameen, stating that the activities could lead to public disorder and calling for them to cease.
