Afcons workers protest over missing colleague, unpaid wages

One of them went missing after the fire and could not be traced yet

A group of workers of Afcons Infrastructure, which is building the Greater Male Bridge began a protest at Gulhifalhu on Saturday, alleging that one person was missing and their salaries were not being paid regularly.

According to Atoll Times, some of the 800-odd Afcons employees in Gulhifalhu have been protesting since Saturday morning. As a result, reliable sources confirmed that they were protesting:

  • One of them went missing after the fire and could not be traced yet

  • The missing man was a truck driver

  • Acting on these complaints, MNDF inspected the scene of the incident but is yet to find the person 

  • The protestors have been raising concerns that their salaries are not being paid regularly 

An official from the bridge project office told Atoll Times that the employees were not satisfied with the fact that some of their basic belongings clothing had been burnt in the fire.

"Afcons is working to address these concerns," the official said.

Afcons has about 1,000 employees in the country for bridge work: 

  • In Gulhifalhu: 800 employees

  • Hulhumale: 200 employees

At least 76 people were injured in the fire that broke out in Gulhifalhu Friday morning. Most of the victims were injured when they jumped to the ground from the second floor of the accommodation block to escape the fire.
