Opposition representatives express confidence in joint political effort
The meeting marked the first joint media engagement by representatives of the three former leaders.
Representatives appointed by former presidents Mohamed Nasheed, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday expressed confidence that opposition groups could work together to address issues facing the country.
The meeting marked the first joint media engagement by representatives of the three former leaders following the launch of a coordinated political movement against the administration of President Mohamed Muizzu.
Each former president appointed two representatives to coordinate activities related to the initiative.
Representing Nasheed are former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eva Abdulla and former Maldivian Democratic Party Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail.
Former President Yameen appointed Mohamed Maleeh Jamal and Ismail Zariyand to represent him.
Representing Solih are former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Saleem and former Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain.
The group held its first meeting at Manhattan Business Hotel.
Speaking after the meeting, Fayyaz Ismail said the representatives were optimistic about the possibility of opposition groups working together.
“By the grace of Allah, we are highly optimistic that the opposition forces, working in unison, can undertake significant efforts to correct the direction in which the nation is currently headed,” Fayyaz said.
According to Fayyaz, the meeting focused on discussions regarding the framework for future coordination and activities.
He also stated that a mechanism would be introduced to provide regular updates to the media regarding the group’s activities.
A formal press conference is expected to be held later this week.
