A total of 137 participants from the first batch of the government's National Service programme have completed military training and joined the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), President Mohamed Muizzu announced on Saturday.
In a post on X, the President said the participants graduated from the 72nd Basic Military Training Course, which was conducted for students who completed the first batch of the 'Vathanee Khidhumath' (National Service) programme.
According to the President, the graduates represent 70 islands across 20 atolls.
"From this course, 137 students representing 70 islands across 20 atolls of the Maldives have graduated," he said.
President Muizzu congratulated the participants who received top placements during the course and extended his congratulations to those who joined military service following completion of the programme.
The National Service programme was launched in October last year with the aim of supporting school leavers who face challenges entering employment or pursuing further education.
The programme seeks to equip participants with skills and opportunities that can support their entry into the workforce while contributing to national development.
More than 300 students took part in the first batch of the programme. Two batches have been completed since its introduction.
The graduation of the 137 participants marks the first group from the National Service programme to complete basic military training and enter military service.
