Two people have been arrested in connection with an assault that occurred during the counting of votes in the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) internal elections at Kamil Didi School in Hulhumalé Phase II.
Police said the incident occurred at around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, when a group entered the school, damaged property and assaulted people inside.
In its initial statement issued on Saturday night, police did not identify the political party or the school involved. However, on Sunday, police confirmed that two Maldivian men, aged 23 and 24, had been arrested in connection with the case.
The Maldives Police Service said the investigation is ongoing.
Videos shared on social media appear to show a group entering the vote-counting venue, assaulting people and throwing chairs and other objects inside the hall.
The PNC held its internal elections on Saturday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to elect presidents and vice presidents of constituency steering committees, along with members for other party positions.
According to the party, more than 2,500 members were elected during the polls, which were held ahead of the PNC's national congress scheduled for September.
