Police have arrested a third suspect in connection with the violence that occurred during the counting of votes in the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) internal elections at Kamil Didi School in Hulhumalé Phase II.
The Maldives Police Service said the incident took place at around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, when a group entered the school, damaged property and assaulted people at the venue.
In its initial statement, police did not identify the political party or the school involved.
Two Maldivian men, aged 23 and 24, were initially arrested in connection with the case.
Later the same night, police arrested another 24-year-old Maldivian man under a court warrant, bringing the total number of arrests to three.
The Criminal Court has remanded all three suspects in custody for 15 days while the investigation continues.
Videos shared on social media appear to show a group entering the vote-counting venue, assaulting people and throwing chairs and other objects inside the hall.
The PNC held its internal elections on Saturday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to elect presidents and vice presidents of constituency steering committees, along with members for other party positions.
According to the party, more than 2,500 members were elected during the polls, which were held ahead of the PNC's national congress scheduled for September.
