Domestic, international travel sees high demand in school holiday

23 December 2022

With the first term report book of the year being given to students on Thursday, many people have started travelling to islands and abroad for holidays.

According to the education calendar, term breaks fall in December and June.

  • The first term break began on Friday

  • Students get 16 days as leave

  • Second term will resume on January 8

  • Students get another month as break in June

With the holidays, most people travel to island. Domestic airlines and speedboat ferries have seen high demand over the past week.

A lot of people are travelling abroad as well. In addition to some neighbouring countries, Thailand and Malaysia have also seen increased number of Maldivian travellers.

As there will be more travel during the holiday season, police and MNDF have strengthened security checks.

What's the weather like?

One of the major complaints during the holidays last June was the heavy rains in June and July. At the start of the holiday, some people had to delay their departure without reaching their hometowns due to heavy rains. At the end of the holiday, they were stuck in the island where they could not return to the capital or the islands due to heavy rains.

Given the weather conditions in the country, both school holidays coincide with the harshest of times. Both the December holidays and the June/July holidays are marked by the onset of monsoon, the data showed.

According to the meteorological service, the weather is likely to remain bad for the next three days.
