Election’s Commission has fined seven Political Parties by MVR 20,000 for not having submitted financial reports as per the requirements and the stipulated deadline.

Vice President of the Commission Ismail Habib said in a tweet on Wednesday evening that the Commission had decided to impose a fine on Wednesday for failing to submit the financial report as per the requirements and failing to submit the report to the Commission by the due date.

The fined parties were:

  • People's National Congress (PNC)

  • Adhaalath Party (AP)

  • Maldives Reform Movement (MRM)

  • Maldives National Party (MNP)

  • Maldivian People's Party (DRP)

  • Maldives Third Way Democrats (MTD)

  • Labour Party (MLSDP)

Habib, who is also the commission's spokesperson, told Dhauru news yesterday evening that most of the parties had been penalised for failing to submit their financial statements within the stipulated deadline. He pointed out that the move by the Commission to penalise had come after having had given  considerable flexibility to parties in 2020 due to Covid pandemic.

Habib stated that all seven Party’s had been penalised for not submitting their reports even within the time given when normalcy had returned.

"All these parties have been asked to pay the fine by the end of next month," he said.

Without naming any one Party, Habib revealed that some of the fined Party’s had submitted the report a few days after the deadline had passed.

"This includes cases related to the financial reports for 2019, 2020 and 2021. As per the law, financial statements have to be filed within three months of the end of the year. That's before March 31 every year at the latest,” Habib said.
