Addu land reclamation work has begun.
The work started on Thursday and machinery and other materials required to start work were transported to the city last week.
The project, funded through an $800 million Indian credit line and handed to Netherlands based Van Ord, is expected to be completed within this year.
A total of 194.3 hectares of land will be reclaimed under the project.
Addu Land Reclamation Project:
-
Land to be reclaimed from three islands of Addu
-
MTCC to reclaim five new islands to build resorts; that is 8.3 hectares of land
-
The project is expected to resolve land constraints in Addu for the next 50 years
The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has requested that the project be carried out in such a way that it does not harm the environment as much as possible as the project will cause serious damage to Addu's environment.
