Maldives, Cambodia discuss boosting trade
President Solih noted that in addition to importing goods from Cambodia to the Maldives, discussions have also been held on the export of fish cans to Cambodia.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Monday that discussions are underway to import various types of goods, including Cambodia's rice, to the Maldives.
Prime Minister of Cambodia Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen arrived in the Maldives Sunday morning at the special invitation of President Solih. In a joint statement issued by the leaders of the two countries on Monday, President Solih highlighted the efforts being made to strengthen trade relations between Maldives and Cambodia.
The president pointed out that the two countries discussed:
-
Importing Cambodian rice; Cambodia's prime minister noted that the country's rice has been awarded the world's best rice award five times
-
Importing corn, cassava, chillies, cashew nuts and fruits to the Maldives
-
Importing other food items, clothing, transportation-related goods and wood
President Solih noted that in addition to importing goods from Cambodia to the Maldives, discussions have also been held on the export of fish cans and sea products of Maldives to Cambodia. Cambodia's prime minister noted that it would be a great ease to be able to provide fish products to the flood-affected people of his country.
"The only benefit that can be gained from diversifying the range of our imports is not that the prices of basic food items sold in the country will go down. Apart from this, the safety of our food will increase and consumers will also get a wide variety of products," said the president.
A business forum will be attended by the Maldives and Cambodian Business Association on the sidelines of the Prime Minister's visit to the Maldives.
"I am confident that the forum will further strengthen the trade relations between the two countries," he said.
