Bilaiyfahi airport construction will begin this term: President

Regarding travel, he added that the RTL ferry service started by the current government is now available in all the islands of Bodu Thiladhunmathi.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Thursday that the construction of the proposed airport in Sh. Bilaiyfahi will begin within the current term.

Speaking to supporters in Bilaiyfahi as part of his primary campaign, the President said that funds have been allocated for the construction of the island's airport and the tendering process is underway to find people to take on the work.

The President said that as promised by the government, the people will see that the airport in Bilaiyfahi has started and the work is progressing.

"I wish it wasn't too late, and then when I came back to this island and met you all, my hope was to see the work being done in Bilaiyfahi," he said.

Bilaiyfahi Airport:

  • The government first opened for expression of interest in early 2021 

  • The bidding price was then reduced and reopened last year

  • Bilaiyfahi airport to be built on cross-subsidy basis

Regarding travel, he added that the RTL ferry service started by the current government is now available in all the islands of Bodu Thiladhunmathi.

"I think everyone can feel it today. They are travelling from one island to another and are carrying out these journeys every day with certainty to get from another that is not available in one island," he said.

"All the residents of Bodu Thiladhunmathi have now been assured that they will be able to leave in the morning and go back to their native islands on the same day without much thought."

The President said that the work started Wednesday night, the completion of the Hanimaadhoo airport development project will bring about a major change in the region and the expansion of tourism and businesses will be boosted.

"Jobs will increase. Being in your hometown, doing the guesthouse business and staying with your family will be accessible to all of you without any more delays," he said, adding that the money that goes into people's pockets will also increase.

"It will be easier to send vegetables, fruits, and fishing products from this area to Male city, other islands and even beyond the Maldives."

Hanimadhoo Airport Project

  • Being developed under a $136.6 million (MVR 2.1 billion) loan from Exim Bank of India 

  • The construction of the Hanimaadhoo airport project began on Wednesday night

  • The government has said that the work will be completed next year and the airport will be operational too by then
