MDP’s presidential primary candidate and former president Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday pledged to build a resort in Fuvahmulah.
Nasheed arrived in Fuvahmulah Wednesday afternoon after a visit to Addu, campaigning for the primary to be held on Saturday. He received a warm welcome on his arrival at Fuvahmulah Airport, which was developed and opened during Nasheed's tenure.
Speaking at a campaign meeting, Nasheed said that MDP had a vision to develop a resort in the rocky area beyond Fuvahmulah Airport after the opening of the airport during his tenure.
"I can assure you that the construction of a resort there will begin in November," he said, arriving in Fuvahmulah for the second time during the presidential primary campaign.
Nasheed said that when MDP came to power in 2008, the area had been declared a separate area since 2007 under then President Maumoon's administration. The party's 2018 manifesto also included developing a resort in the area.
"Five years are coming to an end, that [the construction of the resort] has not been done here," said Nasheed in Fuvahmulah, which was the final destination of his primary campaign.
Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration decided to build a 500-room city hotel in Fuvahmulah ahead of the 2018 presidential elections. However, Yameen lost the election.
