Spanish firm to build hospitals in L. Gan, G.Dh. Gadhdhoo

The project will be funded by a loan of MVR 48.2 million from the Deutsche Bank and MVR 115.8 million from the Saudi Fund.

A Spanish company has been awarded the contract to construct a state-of-the-art tertiary hospital in L. Gan, and develop a hospital in G.Dh. Gaddhoo.

According to the Ministry of Health, as per the agreement signed with HOMT Espana Company of Spain at a ceremony held at the Ministry on Thursday:

  • A climate change-ready hospital with all facilities will be set up in Gan

  • The hospital will provide tertiary-level health services to the population of the area

  • Hospital to be set up in Gaddhoo as well

HOMT Espana, which has been awarded the project, is responsible for major infrastructure works for governments and private players.  

The Health Ministry did not say how much the Spanish company had been entrusted with for the construction of the two hospitals. No further details about the hospital in Gaddhoo have been disclosed either.

However, according to the government-maintained 'Isles' website, the tertiary hospital in Gan:

  • A total of MVR 163.9 million will be spent

  • The project will be funded by a loan of MVR 48.2 million from the Deutsche Bank and MVR 115.8 million from the Saudi Fund.

According to the 'Isles' website, the tertiary hospital in Gaddhoo:

  • MVR 43 million to be spent on the project

  • This was through a loan of MVR 43 million given by Deutsche Bank

The development of tertiary-level hospitals in five regions of the Maldives has been a presidential promise of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The government has also decided to build more hospitals in 12 islands, including Gaddhoo.
