President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that Shangri-La's Villingili Resort, which was closed during the Covid-19 pandemic, will be opened in August or September.
The closure of Shangri-La Resort in 2020 due to Covid-19 has led to the loss of jobs for many of its workers. Many residents of Addu have expressed concern over the fact that the resort has not opened for a long time.
Speaking at the last meeting of the president's campaign held in Addu this evening for the MDP primary, he gave them good news. He said there would be no delay in opening Shangri-La resort.
"Now they [the owners of the resort] have informed that they will be able to do enough to open the facility in August/September," he said.
The government has decided to give up its 30% stake in Addu Investments Private Limited, which operates Shangri-La Resort.
He said the Economic Council has now decided to do whatever is required by the government to revive Shangri-La and the same has been communicated to shangri-la leaders. Within a month, they will have to respond to it," he said.
It is known that shangri-la resort is being sold to a local company. It is learnt that Manta Air and Riolo, which operates Kudahuvadhoo Airport, have agreed to buy the resort. The company also operates a number of resorts in the Maldives under the Pulse hotels and resorts.
