President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Sunday that if he wins the MDP primary, he will win the presidential election in the first round.
President Solih, who is currently campaigning in Addu for the party’s presidential ticket, arrived in Hulhudhoomeedhoo in the afternoon after his visit to Feydhoo and Maradhoo Feydhoo on Sunday. Meedhoo will be the final destination of his visit to the south.
President Solih held a ceremony in Meedhoo on Sunday evening to meet with the people. Addressing the people on the occasion, he said he saw no reason to go for a second round in the presidential elections if he wins the primary.
"I don't see any reason why we should go for a second round of presidential elections if we win this primary. We can finish it before that," he said.
The President said that the people should remember what happened in the past and take inspiration from it.
President Solih recalled the projects undertaken by the current government and previous administrations in Addu.
"Do we want to put an end to these things today? We have to decide things for the future by taking inspiration from the past," he said.
"Is it better to remember what has happened in the past and decide if we want to go back to that past or will we continue to reflect on what is going on [development] in the light of that? It's a decision we have to make."
In addition, some of the highlights of President Solih's speech are:
-
All the islands in Addu are witnessing development
-
There's still a lot of work to be done; it can only be done if MDP is in power
-
MDP needs to be careful about how to stay in power
-
It cannot be known how long it will take for MDP to return to power if it loses power
-
This primary can be won by a huge margin
Speaking about the projects, President Solih said, [The projects] “have been completed, completed, completed."
"Hulhudhoo health centre is done. Meedhoo health centre completed. The tourism zone is over. Hulhumedhoo main road completed. The port is done," president Solih said.
"The land acquisition has been contracted. The social centre has been tendered. The football field has been upgraded and completed. The beach project has been protected and completed. Then if I am going to make a list of things here, I will have to say, its been completed, completed."
He also briefed his supporters about the ongoing projects.
President Solih's campaign visit to Addu concluded with the meeting held in Meedhoo. During his three-day visit, he visited all the inhabited islands of the atoll and interacted with campaign teams and residents.
Though it was an unofficial visit, he attended two ceremonies as president during his tenure.
