Maldives Ocean Plastic Alliance (MOPA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Addu City Council on Thursday, 11 August 2022. The MOU is based on their popular “PET Reverse Logistics Program”, which targets reduction of the plastic littering of our oceans, as well as managing plastic waste on land. PET, short for Polyethylene Terephthalate, is the name of a clear, strong, lightweight and 100% recyclable plastic, which is also the most common type found around.
Signed by the President & Co-Founder of MOPA (also the former Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology); and Mayor Ali Nizar from Addu City, the MOU commits both parties to work together in the collection and recycling of PET bottles, focusing on the shops, restaurants and guesthouses in Addu City.
MOPA has been recycling plastic all over the country, including resorts and islands away from the Greater Male’ area. The collected PET bottles are transported to Male’ and handed over to Parley Maldives to be recycled and upcycled.
Under MOPA’s PET recycling program, the collected plastics are recycled into branded shoes, swimwear and other handy everyday items. According to MOPA, this program is mutually beneficial to achieving the common goal of both Addu City Council and MOPA, to combat single-use plastics in the Maldives.
MOPA’s PET Reverse Logistics Program expansion to Addu City is partnered by:
