With the ease of travel for Chinese nationals, the number of searches about the Maldives on the country's travel platforms has doubled.

According to Chinese media reports, after the visa agreement signed between the Maldives and China last year came into effect on Friday, Maldivians are allowed to travel to China without a visa.

According to a Global Times report, after the deal came into effect on Friday:

  •  Search for Local Hotels on Chinese travel platforms increases by 126%

  • There has been a three-fold increase in the number of hotel searches in the Male area

Before Covid-19, the highest number of tourists from a single country to the Maldives came from China. China is back among the top 10 countries with the highest number of tourist arrivals to the Maldives since the end of last month following the ease-off of Covid-19 restrictions imposed on Chinese tourists to travel outside the country.
