Male mayor Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced on Thursday that 60 employees of the Male City Council will be out on the streets from next month as watchers to take care of the city's roads and help the people.

In January, the council announced plans to hire watchers to manage the city's roads.

Speaking at the council and people's meeting, which was held on Thursday evening at Artificial Beach, Muizzu said that from March 1, 60 council employees will patrol the streets.

Their primary responsibility, he said, would be to help people park their vehicles and take care of other such public works.

Muizzu said that because of the way vehicles are passed, people find it difficult to enter and exit homes and buildings. As a solution, the council proposes to keep parked vehicles in a separate diagonal formation and create space for entry and exit to buildings, he said.

The city council patrol will help and take care of the arrangements, the mayor said.

As additional responsibilities of the watchers, the council had earlier stated:

  • To ensure that parking is carried out as per regulations

  • Checking whether objects are placed on the roads to cause inconvenience to the general public and reporting such incidents

  • Checking if the roads under construction is closed after taking permission from city council

  • Checking if the work is being done by taking permission for construction

Muizzu said that he believed that taking the patrol out on to the streets would make things much better on the road.
