Several top officers of the presidential security unit including its chief Colonel Abdulla Ibrahim have been suspended over the security breach that led to the presidential motorcade entering the site of an opposition protest, the armed forces said Tuesday.

MNDF and the parliament's 241 committee are looking into the president's motorcade entering an opposition protest in front of the party office Monday evening.

In a statement, MNDF said Ibrahim who heads the Presidential Guard unit that oversees the president's security has been suspended. Reliable sources confirmed to Atoll Times that several other officers in the unit have also been suspended.

MNDF said that an international enquiry committee has been formed to look into the matter.

Ibrahim's deputy, Major Ibrahim Haleem has been temporarily given charge of the president's security.

Police have launched an investigation into the "obstruction" of the president's motorcade during the protest in front of the PPM office on Monday night, with four people arrested over the matter.

An emergency motion was also moved in parliament demanding the removal of defence minister Mariya Ahmed Didi, saying the president's motorcade entering an ongoing protest was not considered a coincidence.

However, the motion was dismissed.
