Tourism minister Dr Abdulla Mausoom said on Monday that the Maldives is in a good position to achieve this year's target of attracting tourists to the Maldives.

Mausoom said that the Maldives has reached 500,000 or half a million tourists as of Sunday. According to the data shared by Mausoom:

  • A total of 5,00,597 tourists arrived by Sunday

  • This is an increase of 22.3% over the same period last year

  • 6,501 tourists arrive daily

  • An average of eight nights is spent in the Maldives by tourists 

Maldives is targeting 1.8 million tourist arrivals this year. In the first three months of the year, the Maldives has been: 

  • 27.8% of the target has been achieved  

  • Another 1.2 million tourists need to be brought to the Maldives 

Last year, 1.6 million tourists arrived in the Maldives.

Sharing the latest tourism figures, Mausoom said that it is an achievement that half a million tourists have arrived within the first three months of the year. "This is the work and courage of all stakeholders in the tourism industry," the minister said.

"Tourism in the country is in good shape this year," Mausoom said.

The highest number of tourists to the Maldives come from Russia, which is in the midst of a war. Thus: 

  • A total of 60,590 tourists have arrived from Russia

  • That's 12.1% of the total tourist arrivals in the maldives

Aside from Russia, the countries with the highest number of tourists to the Maldives are: 

  • India - 52,734 tourists

  • UK - 45,545 tourists 

  • Italy - 43,869 tourists 

  • Germany - 34,516 tourists
