The geo-technical survey has been completed to carry out the project to link Sh. Komandoo with the uninhabited island of Mathikomandoo in the same lagoon.

MTCC, which is executing the project, said on Tuesday that the geo-technical survey for the project has been completed as part of the coastal protection project at Komandoo and linking it with Mathikomandu.

Based on the findings of the survey, the company is preparing to build the foundation of the bridge connecting the two Komandoos.

The government has decided to reclaim land from Mathikomandoo and link it to Komandoo through a bridge.

The land reclamation project will be carried out on the southwest side of Mathikomandoo. The project has been handed over to MTCC to be completed within two years.

The project linking the two Komandoos:

  • The entire project will cost MVR 249.9 million

  • 483,786 square meters of sand needed for the reclaimation Mathikomandoo

  • Sand is being collected from an area of 18 square kilometres in Raa Atoll

The government started the process of reclaiming Mathikomandoo and linking it to Komandoo in January 2022, when the parliament's Komandoo seat fell vacant and a by-election was underway.
