The deadline for filing nominations for the polls ended at 12pm on Thursday.
Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Gasim Ibrahim on Thursday become the party's presidential candidate after no one contested the party's primary to decide the candidate for the upcoming presidential elections.
Jumhooree Party has decided to contest the September 9 presidential election separately and opened for the primary on May 16. The deadline for filing nominations for the polls ended at 12pm on Thursday.
In a letter to the JP Secretariat on Monday, Gasim said he had decided to apply for the party ticket as no one had applied when the deadline for filing nominations expired. As the leader of the party, he had a responsibility to achieve what the party wanted, he added.
Gasim had unsuccessfully contested the 2008 and 2013 elections, but his party was part of the coalition that came to power in 2008, 2013 and 2018.
