Parliament speaker Mohamed Nasheed, who has previously cast allegations on MP Hussein Shaheem over the May 6, 2021 assassination attempt said on Wednesday that he did not accuse the South Henveiru MP.
Nasheed's remarks came in following Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed's question to defence minister Mariya Ahmed Didi during Wednesday's parliament session whether the minister had found any link between Shaheem and the attack on the speaker.
Without directly responding to the question, Mariya said the Parliamentary Committee on Security Services had looked into the matter in detail and was taking necessary action after examining the matter.
At the end of the minister's speech, Nasheed said that he should say something on the question as his name was mentioned. Nasheed said he had never made such an allegation the Henveiru South MP.
"If such an allegation had been made, it is a very different kind of assurance for him," he said.
"I have never put that kind of accusation on the head of the honourable MP of Henveiru South constituency, as the honourable minister knows."
In a series of messages Nasheed sent to a parliamentary WhatsApp group on May 6, 2022, he accused MP Shaheem obstructing the work of committees set up to probe the attack.
"Hussain, that's Kerafa, Dhandikoshige blood. Looks like there's going to be an impact. Take a look at your hands, Hussain. My blood is on your hands," Nasheed had said at the time.
Following the allegations, MP Shaheem referred the matter to the police and parliamentary committees as they were serious allegations made by the speaker. He demanded action against Nasheed.
