Private companies on Monday staged a protest outside Fenaka office alleging non-payment of dues owed to goods and serviced provided to the state-owned utility company.

A group of people protested at the entrance of the Port Complex, which houses Fenaka office, with banners and placards, expressing dissatisfaction over non-payment of dues to various companies.

Fenaka, however, denied their allegations.

Fenaka Managing Director Ahmed Saeed told Atoll Times on Monday that he was not aware of the protest.

On the issue of non-payment of dues to private suppliers, Saeed said that there are no dues unpaid, but there is a delay in disbursing the money.

"We have not withheld any dues to any company, but there is a delay," he said.

When asked if the delay in payment was due to a cash flow problem, Saeed said there may be situations where cash transactions can be delayed.

"But we pay our dues regularly. If we didn't, why are they coming to do business with us every now and then?," he said.

STO had earlier said that its credit to Fenaka for fuel supplies had crossed MVR 1 billion.
